Bullish Institutional Investor Outlook

49% of institutional investors are bullish about S&P 500® returns in 2024, 39% are neutral, and 11% are bearish.

But do institutional investors think the index is a good proxy for the US economy? And how does this outlook compare to their outlook for US, country-specific, and global economies?

Liquidity: The Top Reason Institutions Use ETFs

The greatest proportion of institutional investors use ETFs for liquidity management and hedging (23%). Following liquidity, institutions use ETFs for core holdings for diversified exposure (19%), tactical asset allocation and market timing (16%), and access to specific markets, sectors, or themes (15%).

Higher Portfolio Satisfaction Among ETF Users

Heavy users of ETFs* report much higher levels of satisfaction with their portfolio performance over the last 12 months compared to light ETF users.^

Actively Managed ETFs in Demand

The vast majority of institutional investors (80%) report that they are likely to consider actively managed ETFs. Only 4% are not.

And in the Netherlands, institutional investors are even more likely to consider active ETFs (90%).

About the Survey

State Street Global Advisors, in partnership with field partners A2Bplanning and Prodege, conducted an online study in April 2024 among individual investors and institutional investors to assess investor sentiments, investment portfolio trends, the impact of ETFs on portfolio contruction, and more.

This survey further builds on research conducted with individual investors in November and December of 2022. For the 2024 ETF Impact Survey, State Street Global Advisors expanded the scope to include institutional investors from various countries.
